Yao Ming was born in Shanghai in September 1980. His father, 2.08 meters, played basketball, and so did his mother, a 1.93-meter captain for the Chinese National Women’s Team. So with parents of such a height, it should not be surprising for Yao Ming to grow to be 2.26 meters.
Although both of Yao Ming’s parents were professional basketball players, they did not expect their son to follow in their footsteps. “My parents would probably prefer me to go to college and play basketball only as a hobby,” Yao Ming once said, “I like history and archaeology (考古学). I wish I could visit Egypt.”
His first coach remembers Yao not liking basketball very much at the age of 9 and being able to run only four laps around the playground. “Don’t be discouraged,” he told Yao, “You do four times today, five times next week and six times the week after that.”
A friend remembers kids half Yao’s size being able to jump higher than him early on because Yao’s body and coordination were yet to develop. He was skinny, weak in the chest, and friends jokingly called his arms “chopsticks” because there was not much muscle there.
Yao Ming began to receive regular basketball training at the age of 9. During the following years of hard training, Yao Ming developed both his basketball skills and confidence as he kept growing. By 13, he had earned a spot on his local youth team-the Shanghai Oriental Sharks. At the age of 17, he began to play in the National Youth’s Basketball Team and a year later, he was a member of the National Men’s Basketball Team.
